Iran’s parliamentary speaker, who serves as Tehran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has cautioned the United States against threatening Iran. He vowed that ‘our armed forces are ready to respond.’

‘Do they not think that if their threats were effective, they would not have reached such a state of desperation? We do not take American threats into account,’ Ghalibaf said, as reported by Al Arabiya on Monday (22/6/2026). He made the statement after US President Donald Trump threatened to attack Iran over its support for the Hezbollah group in Lebanon.

‘They should be careful with their statements; our armed forces are ready to respond to them in different ways. Whatever they say, we will be the ones to act,’ he stressed.

Earlier on Sunday (21/6), Trump had posted on his Truth Social platform: ‘Iran must immediately stop their expensive PROXIES in Lebanon from causing trouble.’

‘If they do not, we will hit Iran very hard again, like we did last week, only harder!!!’ Trump declared.

Ghalibaf’s comments came as the US and Iran held talks in Switzerland with Pakistan and Qatar acting as mediators. The meeting took place after the signing of a preliminary agreement to end the US-Iran war earlier this week.

According to Article 1 of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by Iran and the US earlier this month, it specifically states that both countries pledge to ‘refrain from threats or the use of force against one another.’

Meanwhile, it was reported that US Vice President JD Vance departed for Switzerland to hold talks with Iran on implementing the agreement to end the war in the Middle East. He said that negotiators would discuss the Islamic republic’s nuclear programme and the Lebanon ceasefire.

‘I think we will hopefully make progress on the nuclear issue, make progress on the Lebanon ceasefire issue. Those are the two big things I think we should focus on,’ Vance told reporters before departing from Joint Base Andrews in the US, as reported by AFP on Sunday (21/6/2026).

Vance said he could only join the talks ‘for a day or two.’
