Trump Thanks Putin and Xi for Not Interfering in Iran
President Donald Trump has thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping for what he described as their neutrality during the war with Iran. Trump made the remarks after signing a memorandum of understanding to end hostilities, during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit on Wednesday evening. “Just signed it,” Trump said upon exiting the palace.
Separately, the Iranian government confirmed it had signed the document to end the war with the United States. “The text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has been finalised with the signatures of the Presidents — now is the time to test the implementation of the agreement,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, as quoted by state news agency IRNA. Baqaei stated the signing was conducted electronically and remotely by both Presidents, and that a formal ceremony “does not have much of a place” in Iran’s plans.
Trump acknowledged that global oil reserves were at a critical juncture, urging Washington to accept Iran’s terms for a framework agreement to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the G7 summit in France, Trump said that without a deal with Iran, the world would face “chaos” as oil reserves would run out in approximately four weeks. “We’re going to run out of reserves in about four weeks,” Trump told reporters. “You know, there are reserves all over the world, and we’re going to literally run out, and there will be a time when you can’t get it.” The US President admitted that continued military strikes would keep the Strait of Hormuz, vital for global oil trade, closed. “If we keep bombing, those ships aren’t going to be able to sail,” he said, referring to the impact of an agreement with Tehran.
Trump also thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin for their neutrality during the war. “I just want to thank them because they made things a lot better,” Trump said during a press conference on the sidelines of the G7 conference in Evian-les-Bains, France. The US-Iran peace plan has now entered a new chapter after the Presidents of both countries signed the peace agreement document. The Swiss government previously stated that a signing ceremony would be held on Friday at a luxury mountain hotel overlooking Lake Lucerne, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Bagher Ghalibaf and US Vice President JD Vance in attendance. “When the text is signed by the highest officials of both countries, violating it will certainly incur greater costs, and given our experience, we prefer this to happen,” Baqaei said. The text of the agreement was released on Wednesday by both parties. A two-month negotiation period will follow, with the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as the first step.
