Trump Suspends Immigrant Visa Applications Worldwide, Here Are the Reasons
A number of United States immigrant visa applicants across the globe must now wait longer for their interviews. The administration of US President Donald Trump has postponed several previously scheduled appointments for applicants.
Behind this delay, the US government is preparing more stringent visa inspections. Consular officers at various US embassies and consulates are required to undergo global training to enhance the applicant screening process, including assessing the likelihood of applicants relying on public benefits while in the US.
According to a Financial Times report cited by Channel News Asia on Sunday (30/08/2026), applicants received notifications via email stating that their interview schedules had been postponed. They will be provided with information regarding new schedules at a time to be determined later.
This postponement of interview schedules occurs as the Trump administration tightens immigration policies, targeting both illegal immigration and legal immigration pathways. Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has pushed for aggressive deportation policies and tightened the processes for issuing and revoking visas and green cards.
His administration has also faced criticism for using various considerations when assessing an individual’s eligibility to enter or remain in the US, including political activities and involvement in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. The US government has stated that these policies are necessary to enhance national and domestic security.
These policies have triggered a series of legal challenges. Last Friday, a US federal judge overturned the Trump administration’s policy that suspended the issuance of immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries. The judge ruled that the policy exceeded the legal authority of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The Trump administration’s immigration tightening measures have also drawn condemnation from various human rights organisations. They argue that the policies are potentially discriminatory and could threaten freedom of speech and the right to due process.
Several human rights groups have also warned that increasingly strict immigration policies could create a sense of insecurity for minority groups in the US. Concerns primarily relate to the potential increase in racial profiling practices, which involve targeting individuals based on race or ethnic characteristics.
