Trump Suggests Tolls on Tankers Crossing Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump suggested imposing entry fees on every oil tanker intending to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. He made the statement while answering a media question regarding the end of the Iran war during a press conference at the White House on Monday (6 April 2026). “What if we charge a toll? I prefer doing that rather than letting them have it. Why not? We are the winners,” Trump explained, quoted from The Hill. For Trump, Iran has already lost militarily, so the US has the right to set rules in the Strait of Hormuz. “We won, okay? They lost militarily. We have a concept where we will charge a toll,” he clarified. Nevertheless, Trump did not want to answer regarding the peace conditions proposed to Iran. He only gave a brief statement that the war would end when global oil trade is free. If his warning is taken lightly, Tehran must prepare to face the consequences. “They can be eliminated,” Trump explained, quoted from Reuters on Tuesday (7 April 2026). Following this statement, global oil prices rose again. Brent crude futures rose $0.57 or 0.5% to $110.34 per barrel (approximately Rp1,880,634 at Rp17,050 exchange rate). Meanwhile, US West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose $1.26 or 1.1% to $113.67 (Rp1,937,959) per barrel.
