US President Donald Trump has affirmed that Iran has the opportunity to contact Washington if it intends to negotiate a halt to the ongoing war between the two countries. Trump made this statement on Sunday (26/04/2026), signalling that the US remains open to dialogue but awaits initiative from Tehran. Quoting Reuters, Trump stressed the availability of diplomatic communication channels that can be used at any time by the opposing side. “If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. You know, there is a phone. We have good and secure channels,” Trump said in an interview on Fox News’ “The Sunday Briefing” programme. This comment arises amid renewed diplomatic deadlock following the failure of a planned meeting in Pakistan. On Saturday (25/04/2026), Trump surprisingly cancelled the travel plans of his special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to the country. Trump’s decision to withdraw Witkoff and Kushner represents a new blow to regional peace prospects. The cancellation occurred shortly after Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi departed from Islamabad after only speaking with Pakistani officials without meeting the US side. Although the US delegation is confirmed to be absent from the negotiation table in Pakistan, Araqchi has reportedly returned to the country. Iran’s diplomatic move continues despite uncertainty regarding the presence of counterparts from Washington to proceed with peace discussions.
