Trump Suddenly Postpones Attack on Iran Following Call from Prince MBS
US President Donald Trump has stated that he will postpone plans for new attacks against Iran as long as there remains an opportunity to reach an agreement that can halt Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the world’s most vital energy shipping lane, which is currently in a state of uncertainty due to conflict.
Trump made the announcement on Saturday (1/8/202lar) local time via the Truth Social platform. He stated that Iran, along with several Middle Eastern nations, has requested time to finalise a deal that would result in the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and end Iran’s nuclear threat.
“Iran and other Middle Eastern countries are asking for time to finalise a deal that will result in the Immediate, Complete, and Total reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and end the Iranian nuclear threat,” Trump wrote.
Trump emphasised that, based on this request, he has decided to cancel the previously considered attacks. “Based on that request, I have agreed, for the sake of the WORLD’S future and also for the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel that attack, provided that an agreement can be reached immediately,” he continued.
Trump also claimed that Israel supports this move. “Israel joins me in this commitment,” he wrote. However, the Israeli government has not yet issued an official statement regarding this claim.
Trump’s statement comes amidst rising tensions after Iran warned the US over the weekend against engaging in what it described as new military “adventures”.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi conveyed this message during a series of telephone conversations with high-ranking officials from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia on Saturday. According to Araqchi’s Telegram account, during talks with Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Iran asserted it would respond firmly to any acts of aggression.
Araqchi stated that Iran would provide a decisive response to any “aggression” and discussed the consequences of “destabilising actions” by the US, as well as the prospects of increased regional insecurity.
In a separate conversation with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Araqchi reiterated that any attack by the US and Israel, or the involvement of regional nations in such operations, would be met with a “proportionate response.”
Amidst the escalating tensions, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also reported to have spoken directly with Trump on Saturday. A US official told Axios that the de facto leader of Saudi Arabia “conveyed concerns and sought clarity” regarding US plans towards Iran. A White House official also confirmed to Reuters that Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump, though they provided no further details regarding the content of the discussion.
