London (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump has said he is not sure whether an agreement will soon be reached between the US and Iran because negotiations regarding the nuclear programme and ongoing conflicts continue without resolution.

“I don’t know. If they don’t, they will face a very bad situation. They have an interest in reaching an agreement,” the US president told BFMTV correspondents in the US, Saturday.

According to several media reports, Trump is expected to decide within the next few hours whether to proceed with strikes against the Iranian regime, as talks aimed at ending the conflict and addressing Iran’s nuclear programme have so far failed to reach an agreement.

Regional tensions remain high since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran on 28 February, which triggered retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and US allies in Gulf countries, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire came into effect on 8 April through mediation by Pakistan, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Trump then extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining a blockade against ships sailing to or from Iranian ports through the strategic waterway.
