Trump Signs Security Agreement with Greenland and Denmark at UN
US President Donald Trump has signed a security agreement with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark. The agreement was signed during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
“This will be an extraordinary long-term relationship,” Trump stated during the event in New York, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (22/9/2026).
Trump previously stated that this agreement would provide America with “permanent control” over the security of Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory in the Arctic that he has long targeted.
“Mr President, you have made it very clear. You do not want the opposition to come too close,” said Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen prior to the signing.
“I completely agree, and with this agreement, that will not happen,” she added, emphasising that opposing parties would not be permitted to gain significant control or influence in the region.
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, added that Greenland holds vital importance for both North American and transatlantic security.
“This agreement reflects that we understand our responsibilities and are acting accordingly,” he added.
Since returning to office as president in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly asserted that the United States needs to control Greenland for strategic reasons. This stance has caused concern for Denmark—a NATO ally—and has triggered strong opposition from the alliance.
