Trump Shortens Weekend Trip Amid Middle East Escalation
US President Donald Trump has abruptly returned to the White House after shortening his weekend visit to Camp David. His return comes as tensions in the Middle East intensify once again.
This schedule change coincides with a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia. Amidst the situation, the US State Department has also issued warnings to its citizens regarding the potential for a broader escalation of conflict.
Trump had previously been spending the weekend at Camp David, the US presidential retreat in rural Maryland. However, he subsequently shortened his visit and returned to the White House on Sunday (20/09/2026).
According to Anadolu and AFP, the White House has not provided an explanation for Trump’s early return. Changes to a president’s travel schedule are not unusual, including due to weather factors; forecasts indicated rain and thunderstorms in the Camp David area on that day.
Trump’s return also occurs as the security situation in the Middle East heats up. The Saudi-led coalition previously stated that the Houthis had fired ballistic missiles towards Riyadh.
US Concerned About Expanding Conflict
The US State Department and several US embassies have since issued security warnings for American citizens. The US government has asked its citizens to reconsider travel to and through the Middle East region.
“This military conflict has the potential to escalate rapidly,” warned the US State Department.
Through the Travel.Gov account, the US State Department also noted that the security situation in the region remains complex. American citizens have been asked to increase vigilance and prepare for potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.
“Due to tensions in the Middle East, the security situation remains complex with the potential for unexpected escalation,” the statement read.
Riyadh Targeted by Houthi Attacks
Tensions escalated after explosions were heard in Riyadh on Saturday (19/09) local time. Saudi authorities had previously issued air raid warnings following threats from the Iran-backed Houthi group.
The Saudi-led coalition stated that a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards Riyadh was successfully intercepted and destroyed. The coalition also noted that the Houthi attacks targeted civilians and civilian infrastructure in several regions.
Saudi Arabia responded by launching airstrikes on Houthi-controlled territories. The Houthi group subsequently claimed to have carried out retaliatory attacks using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones.
US Citizens Urged to Remain Vigilant
The US State Department also warned of potential disruptions to diplomatic facilities and US interests in various countries. Iran and its-backed groups are said to potentially target other US interests abroad.
Americans located in the region are asked to monitor the latest information regarding airport operations and airlines. The warning was issued amidst rising tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, as well as the re-escalation of conflict in Yemen.
