Trump sends revised Iran peace framework with stricter conditions
Istanbul (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump has sent a revised version of the proposed peace framework to Iran with stricter conditions, amid ongoing efforts to reach a deal that could end the conflict.
The New York Times reported on Saturday (30 May), citing three officials familiar with the matter, that Trump altered several sections of the draft agreement and resubmitted it to Tehran for consideration. The report did not detail the specific changes made to the document.
Officials said Trump expressed concerns over provisions that could include the release of Iran’s frozen assets, an issue he previously criticised regarding the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated under former US President Barack Obama.
The report also noted Trump’s growing frustration with Iran’s slow response to US proposals negotiated through intermediaries, including officials from Pakistan.
One official told the newspaper that the revised proposal aims to increase pressure on Tehran and encourage acceptance of the previously submitted framework for approval by Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.
However, the report noted that communication with Iran’s Supreme Leader has proven difficult, potentially causing further delays if additional changes are made to the document described as a memorandum of understanding.
More sensitive issues, including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme, will be discussed in the next round of negotiations, according to the report.
News site Axios cited US officials stating that Trump was informed Iran might take up to three days to respond.
“They are really underground and not using email,” the official said.
“There will be a deal. How quickly, we’ll see. We’re willing to wait for the president to get what he wants. It could be a week, less, or longer. By the end of the week, we hope for something,” the official added.
On Friday, Trump held a two-hour meeting with senior advisers in the White House Situation Room to discuss efforts to end the conflict. However, no public announcement was made following the meeting.
