Moscow (ANTARA) — United States President Donald Trump is seeking veto rights over potential Russian and Chinese investments in Greenland, The Telegraph reports citing diplomatic sources.

According to the report, the Trump administration’s main objective in negotiations over Greenland’s future is to prevent China from gaining access to the island’s mineral resources.

Representatives from the United States, Greenland, and Denmark are reportedly secretly engaged in talks on an agreement that would meet Trump’s desire to control the territory.

The talks are designed to give Trump a chance to avoid using threats to seize the Arctic island by force, The Telegraph reports.

Another source told the newspaper that the United States would only seek to extract most of the oil, uranium, rare earth metals, and other critical minerals beneath the ice if Beijing were to cut global supplies.

Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the territory should join the United States, emphasising the strategic importance of the island for national security.

The governments of Denmark and Greenland have warned Washington not to take over the island, and emphasised that they expect their territorial integrity to be respected.
