Trump seeks to clarify uranium transfer details in Iran deal

US President Donald Trump seeks to clarify details of Iran’s enriched uranium transfers to Washington and revise clauses regarding the opening of the Strait of Hormuz in the draft memorandum of understanding with Iran. According to Axios, citing a senior Trump administration official and sources familiar with the matter, President Trump pledged to make a final decision on the situation with Iran. However, the US media reported that no final agreement has been reached. Trump held an intelligence briefing in Washington on Friday morning (29 May). On Sunday, The New York Times reported that Trump has imposed stricter conditions for a potential deal to end the conflict with Iran and has submitted a new proposal to Tehran. Under the agreement, parties would have 60 days to finalise a deal on Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of US sanctions. Key issues include Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium and restrictions on further enrichment. This is the aspect Trump seeks to alter. ‘What is wanted is more specific details on how the US will receive the material (enriched uranium) and when the process will take place,’ a senior Trump administration official told the outlet. On 28 February, the US and Israel launched joint attacks on several targets in Iran, killing more than 3,000 people. On 8 April, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire followed by talks in Islamabad which concluded without results. Although no announcement has been made regarding the resumption of hostilities, the US has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.
