WASHINGTON — United States President Donald Trump said he must be involved in the selection of Iran’s new Supreme Leader to replace the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Trump stressed that he rejects Iran being led by Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

Trump revealed that Mojtaba Khamenei is indeed the figure most likely to be chosen as Iran’s next Supreme Leader. However, Trump was unwilling to accept that.

“They are wasting time. Ali Khamenei’s son is an ineffectual figure. I must be involved in the appointment, as with Delcy Rodríguez in Venezuela,” Trump said on Thursday, according to Axios.

Trump added that he would reject a new Iranian Supreme Leader who would continue the policies of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. He warned that if such a figure were chosen to replace Ali Khamenei, the United States would go to war with Iran again within five years.

“Ali Khamenei’s son is not acceptable to me. We want someone who will bring harmony and peace to Iran,” Trump said.
