Several United States officials have reportedly issued ‘indirect warnings’ to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. This emergency measure was taken following significant concerns that Israel is planning ‘assassination operations against both skilled negotiators’ to thwart peace diplomacy.
According to a New York Times report, as cited by the Times of Israel on Friday (3/7/2026), these assassination threats emerged several weeks after the ceasefire agreement on 8 April. Although fragile, the ceasefire has so far halted the war between the US-Israel alliance and Iran.
‘Washington is concerned that if Israel actually eliminates Araghchi and Ghalibaf, the entire ongoing negotiation process will collapse and trigger a much more massive new armed conflict,’ said one source.
Ghalibaf himself reportedly narrowly escaped death after the aircraft he was travelling on was forced to make an emergency landing in Mashhad, in north-eastern Iran. This incident occurred while he was returning from Islamabad, Pakistan, following intensive dialogues with US Vice President JD Vance on 12 April.
Iranian security forces reportedly detected two Israeli fighter jets that recklessly breached their airspace via Iraqi routes. Both were indicated to be attempting to ambush the parliament speaker’s aircraft.
Due to the emergency situation, Ghalibaf and the entire Iranian delegation were forced to be evacuated. He had to undertake an eight-hour overland journey to return to the capital, Tehran.
Given the fatal risks to global stability, US authorities even had to seek assistance from officials in several Middle Eastern allied countries to relay this secret warning directly to Tehran. This preventive step was taken because, since the outbreak of war on 28 February, the Israeli military has continued to systematically target and assassinate senior Iranian leadership, including National Security Head Ali Larijani and former Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi, who were potential figures for negotiating with the US.
Previously in March, while intense fighting was still ongoing, the Pakistani government conducted diplomatic intervention by urging Washington to pressure Israel to remove Araghchi and Ghalibaf from their assassination target list. Due to the high security risks, the Iranian delegation even requested international guarantees and strict escort by Pakistani Air Force fighter jets upon landing in Islamabad to ensure their safety from Israeli intelligence.
‘The US asked Israel to back down,’ a Pakistani official told Reuters, explaining that Islamabad had warned Washington that if both figures were killed, there would be no one left in Tehran to engage in ceasefire negotiations.
