A number of United States officials reportedly conveyed an ‘indirect warning’ to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. The emergency measure was taken following significant concerns that Israel was planning an ‘assassination operation against the two consummate negotiators’ to sabotage peace diplomacy. According to a New York Times report, the assassination threat emerged in the weeks after the 8 April ceasefire agreement. Ghalibaf himself reportedly narrowly escaped death after the aircraft he was travelling on was forced to make an emergency landing in Mashhad, northeastern Iran. The incident occurred while he was returning from Islamabad, Pakistan, following intensive dialogue with US Vice President JD Vance on 12 April. Iranian security forces reportedly detected two Israeli fighter jets that had brazenly penetrated their airspace via the Iraq route. The two jets were indicated to be attempting to intercept the parliament speaker’s plane. Due to the emergency situation, Ghalibaf and the entire Iranian delegation were forced to evacuate. He had to travel overland for eight hours to return to the capital, Tehran. Given the potentially fatal risks to global stability, US authorities reportedly sought help from officials in several allied Middle Eastern countries to relay the secret warning directly to Tehran. This preventive step was taken because since the war broke out on 28 February, the Israeli military has been systematically targeting and killing senior Iranian leadership figures, including national security chief Ali Larijani and former foreign minister Kamal Kharazi, who were potential figures for negotiation with the US. Previously in March, while fierce fighting was ongoing, the Pakistani government intervened diplomatically by urging Washington to pressure Israel to remove Araghchi and Ghalibaf from their assassination target list. Given the high security risk, the Iranian delegation had even requested international guarantees and a tight escort from Pakistani air force fighter jets upon landing in Islamabad to ensure their safety from Israeli intelligence operations.
