Trump Says US Currently in Negotiations with Cuba to Reach Deal
Washington (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump stated on Monday (16/2) that his administration is currently in talks with Cuba.
"We are talking with Cuba now," Trump told reporters whilst travelling to Washington.
Trump said Secretary of State Marco Rubio is leading the discussions. "They really have to make a deal," he added.
Trump described Cuba as a "failed state."
"We'll see how it turns out. But Cuba and us are talking. Meanwhile, there's an embargo, no oil, no money," he said.
When asked whether he would consider military operations similar to those carried out in Venezuela, Trump said he did not wish to answer the question.
"Why would I answer that? If I did it, it wouldn't be too difficult an operation, as you can imagine, but I don't think it will be necessary," he said.
The US has reimposed a blockade on Cuba and declared its intention to topple the country's communist government through various means.
Washington has also imposed an embargo on fuel shipments to the island nation, which had previously been facing severe supply shortages.
The US had earlier succeeded in halting oil supplies to Cuba from Mexico and Venezuela, and in the latter case, US forces captured President Nicolas Maduro.
Washington also announced its intention to impose reciprocal import tariffs on goods from countries that supply fuel to Cuba.
