Trump says the US and Iran may be close to an agreement

Washington – US President Donald Trump said on Monday that there is a ‘positive development’ underway and he thinks Iran is close to reaching a deal this time, a few hours after he announced delaying the resumption of military attacks against the country. This time it is ‘slightly different’ from previous talks that had stalled, where Washington believed a deal was nearly within reach, Trump told reporters at the White House. ‘This is a very positive development, but we will see whether it really bears fruit,’ he said. ‘We have been in a period where we felt we were close to reaching an agreement, but it turned out to fail. However, this time is slightly different,’ Trump said. Trump added that Gulf states asked him to delay the attack on Iran, scheduled for Tuesday (19 May), for a few days, but the delay could last longer. Meanwhile, Trump reiterated that Iran must suspend its nuclear programme. ‘Now they must put it in writing,’ Trump said.
