Trump says negotiations with Iran could resume 'at some point'

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (19/8) signalled that negotiations with Tehran could resume ‘at some point’, while claiming the situation with Iran is ‘very good’. ‘Right now, I think the situation is very good,’ Trump told reporters, repeating his claim that the US ‘controls’ and has ‘full command’ of the Strait of Hormuz, which was effectively closed shortly after the US and Israel launched a major military operation against Iran on 28 February. Trump also reiterated that Washington’s priority is preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Citing statements from a number of US officials, CNN reported on Tuesday (18/8) that Trump had ordered his negotiating team to halt talks with Iran. Trump announced on social media on Tuesday that there were no ‘ongoing or scheduled talks or negotiations’ between the US and Iran, while the US Navy blockade ‘remains fully in force’.
