US President Donald Trump has stated that he might meet with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, if a deal is reached between the two nations. Trump even mentioned that he would feel “honoured” to meet Mojtaba.

“I do not want to meet, but if I do meet, I would feel honoured to meet him,” Trump said when asked by reporters about the possibility of a meeting with the Iranian Supreme Leader, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Friday (5/6/2026).

“I want to see if we reach a deal, but if we have reached a deal, there is a possibility I will meet him,” the US President remarked during an interview with journalists on Thursday (4/6) local time.

When asked further by reporters whether such a meeting would take place in the US, Trump replied: “I have not heard much about that. I do not suggest it, but some people have suggested it.”

Mojtaba assumed the role of Iran’s Supreme Leader, succeeding his late father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in early March. Khamenei was killed alongside members of his family during the initial wave of US and Israeli attacks on Iran in late February.

Mojtaba himself sustained injuries during the same attacks and has not appeared before the public since taking office.

When asked whether he would continue US military operations if Iran killed more US troops in the Middle East, Trump replied: “That would be a good reason. To be honest, if they kill US soldiers, I think I would do it very quickly.”

Discussing negotiations with Tehran further, Trump stated that any potential deal requirements would necessitate Iran abandoning its nuclear ambitions.

“As far as Iran is concerned, you will know what the deal is, but the main part of the deal is that they must not have nuclear weapons,” he emphasised.

Regarding efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Trump expressed confidence that the strategic waterway would soon be reopened.

“The Strait will be opened soon, you know, it will be opened soon, and we have largely completed the mine sweeping,” he said, adding that the US possesses advanced underwater mine-sweeping capabilities.

Trump’s statements come as Washington and Tehran continue efforts to transform a fragile ceasefire into a broader agreement following months of conflict that began on 28 February with large-scale US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks against Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military assets. Additionally, Iran restricted transit activities in the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global oil and gas supplies.
