Trump says Iran is in 'total collapse' amid conflict with US

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Iran is ‘totally collapsing’ amid the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran.

‘IRAN IS TOTALLY COLLAPSING!!! President DJT (Donald J. Trump),’ Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform without providing further explanation. The statement echoed previous claims about Iran’s economic and military condition.

On Sunday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US was entering an ‘economic D-Day’ against Iran, following what he described as the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the Islamic Republic’s military and nuclear capabilities.

‘President (Donald) Trump has crippled Iran’s military capability, destroyed nearly 100 percent of its military factories, and buried its nuclear programme,’ Bessent said in a post on the social media platform X.

Trump said on Friday that he still believed Iran was not ready to reach a proper deal with Washington, while increasingly stringent economic measures were being imposed on Tehran.

‘They want to make a deal, but I think they are not ready to make a proper deal,’ Trump told reporters.

‘They have no money, no navy, no air force, they are not paying their soldiers or their police. They have 350 percent inflation,’ he added.

Trump also signalled that the US maintained ‘full control’ over the area around the Strait of Hormuz, including the strategic waterway and the surrounding land areas in southern Iran.

Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding in June calling for a cessation of hostilities and the restoration of shipping through the strait. However, the agreement subsequently failed to be implemented due to disputes over its terms of application and the future of navigation in the waterway.

The conflict began in late February when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran. Tehran then responded by attacking a number of targets in Israel as well as US military bases in the region.
