US President Donald Trump has acknowledged that a final agreement with Iran may not be achieved, amid ongoing communications between the two countries. Further negotiations between Washington and Tehran are reported to resume this weekend.

“We haven’t reached an agreement. It might not happen,” Trump said while speaking to his supporters in Las Vegas on Thursday (16 April 2026).

Nevertheless, Trump expressed optimism that developments in the near future could bring “pleasant surprises”, including the potential for lower oil and petrol prices. He also reaffirmed that the conflict with Iran would be resolved soon, though he provided no clear timeframe.

Previously, Iran and the United States held talks in Islamabad on 11 April following the achievement of a two-week ceasefire agreement. However, US Vice President JD Vance stated on 12 April that the two sides failed to reach an agreement in those negotiations, and the US delegation returned without results.

The situation has grown more complex after the US Navy began enforcing a blockade on all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz on 13 April. The strait is a strategic route accounting for approximately 20% of the world’s supply of oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas. The US government stated that non-Iranian ships can still pass through the Strait of Hormuz as long as they do not pay fees to Tehran, while Iranian authorities have yet to announce an official policy regarding the proposed collection plan.
