Trump Says Blockade in Strait of Hormuz is Profitable: We're Like Pirates

Former US President Donald Trump made the statement at an event in the state of Florida, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Saturday (2 May 2026). Trump stated that Washington had seized Iranian cargo and oil as part of the blockade. “We’re taking over the cargo. Taking over the oil, a very profitable business. Who would have thought, we’re like pirates, but we’re not playing around,” Trump said. Trump explained that this was done in response to Iran’s actions. According to Trump, Iran has used the Strait of Hormuz for years as a tool to exert pressure. “The Strait of Hormuz as a weapon for years, they said they would close it. So, they closed it, then I closed it for them,” he stated. Negotiations are still ongoing between the US and Iran. However, Trump expressed doubt about reaching an agreement with Iran. “Honestly, it might be better if we don’t make a deal at all,” he said, but then claimed that the situation could not continue. The US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on 28 February, which triggered retaliation from Tehran against US allies in the Gulf and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was announced on 8 April through mediation by Pakistan, followed by talks in Islamabad on 11-12 April, but no agreement was reached. Trump then unilaterally extended the ceasefire without setting a new timeframe, at Pakistan’s request. Meanwhile, reports indicate that the Trump administration is working to form an international coalition to restore maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Since 13 April, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in those waters.
