Trump: Saudi Nuclear Deal Contingent on Joining Abraham Accords

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, WASHINGTON – United States President Donald Trump has said that the nuclear cooperation programme agreement with Saudi Arabia signed this week ensures that Riyadh will not carry out uranium enrichment. In addition, Saudi Arabia is also required to normalise relations with Israel.

“There will be no enrichment of material. And this agreement is subject to Saudi Arabia joining the Abraham Accords,” Trump said via his Truth Social account on Thursday (23/7/2026).

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday (21/7/2026), citing US officials, reported that Donald Trump had approved an agreement with Saudi Arabia to develop the kingdom’s nuclear infrastructure in the Gulf region. The deal could potentially pave the way for uranium enrichment within Saudi territory.

The 30-year agreement is estimated to be worth tens of billions of US dollars. The deal would require American companies to build uranium enrichment facilities in Saudi Arabia should both parties deem such a step necessary.

A number of officials have expressed concerns that the agreement does not contain adequate security guarantees for the United States. Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright was scheduled to sign the agreement on Wednesday, before it is then submitted to Congress for review.

The report stated that the agreement is likely to spark controversy among members of Congress who oppose the spread of nuclear technology in the volatile Middle East region. To block the agreement, Congress would have to pass a joint resolution and secure a two-thirds majority in both chambers (the Senate and the House) in order to override the president’s veto.
