Washington (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump has reportedly approved an agreement with Saudi Arabia to develop the kingdom’s nuclear infrastructure in the Gulf region. The deal, which could pave the way for uranium enrichment on Saudi soil, was reported by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, citing US officials. The 30-year agreement is estimated to be worth tens of billions of US dollars. It would oblige American companies to build uranium enrichment facilities in Saudi Arabia if both parties deem it necessary. Several officials have expressed concerns that the agreement lacks adequate security guarantees for the United States. US Energy Secretary Chris Wright is scheduled to sign the agreement on Wednesday, after which it will be submitted to Congress for review. The report suggests the deal is likely to spark controversy among lawmakers who oppose the proliferation of nuclear technology in the volatile Middle East region. To block the agreement, Congress would need to pass a joint resolution and secure a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override a presidential veto.
