US President Donald Trump is reportedly ready to end military operations against Iran, even if access to the Strait of Hormuz is not fully opened. Trump stated that his side would focus on destroying missiles and the Iranian Navy. According to The Times of Israel, as cited by detikNews on Tuesday (31/3/2026), this information was reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Monday (30/3) local time, quoting Trump administration officials. WSJ reported that Trump and his advisers concluded that the timeframe for military operations to open the Strait of Hormuz would be too long. The operation was estimated to extend the war’s duration beyond the 4-6 weeks previously set by Trump. Washington also assessed that negotiations with Iran would become more difficult due to the deaths of several top Iranian leaders. WSJ also reported that Trump decided to focus on the destruction of missiles and the Iranian Navy before pressuring Tehran more deeply diplomatically to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. As is known, Iran has blocked most of the global oil route in the Strait of Hormuz as retaliation for the joint US and Israel attacks since 28 February. This move has driven up global energy prices. On Monday (30/3), Trump boasted of ‘major progress’ in negotiations to reach an agreement to end the war. However, he also emphasised that if no agreement is reached soon and the Strait of Hormuz is not ‘Opened for Business’, the US will proceed with ‘blowing up and completely destroying all Power Plants, Oil Wells, and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalination plants)’.
