US President Donald Trump earned more than USD 1 billion (around Rp 17.95 trillion) over the past year from his cryptocurrency business lines, according to his mandatory annual financial disclosure for the 2025 period.

In the 927-page disclosure document, Trump reported royalty receipts of USD 635 million (around Rp 11.4 trillion) sourced from the Trump meme coin. The value of that digital asset had fallen sharply since its launch a few days before he was officially sworn in as president again.

He also recorded income of more than USD 500 million (around Rp 8.97 trillion) from World Liberty Financial, a crypto company founded by his sons together with the children of his special envoy, Steve Witkoff.

Trump also pocketed millions of additional dollars from the real estate sector and the sale of various merchandise themed around himself. Nevertheless, the White House strongly denies allegations that the president is using his office to reap personal gains.

The income in the latest financial report surged dramatically compared with the 2024 period, when Trump reported earnings of USD 600 million (around Rp 10.7 trillion).

Even so, the White House has again denied any conflict of interest, repeatedly stressing that Trump has handed over management of his businesses to a trust run by his sons.

Deputy White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly said the president has in fact proudly made the United States the “crypto capital of the world”.

“Neither the President nor his family has ever been, and will never be, involved in a conflict of interest,” Kelly said in a written statement.

“Every action taken by President Trump and his administration is purely for the good of the American people. Anyone claiming to be a ‘journalist’ who pushes the opposite narrative is simply recycling stale and false talking points that the Democratic Party and mainstream media have been peddling for the past decade,” she added.

The president himself has also emphasised that he is not bound by federal laws concerning conflicts of interest for public officials.

Yet Trump was once a vocal critic of cryptocurrency. In 2021, he branded Bitcoin a “scam” and “a disaster waiting to happen”.

However, the political and business landscape shifted during his presidential campaign three years later. Trump reversed course and declared his ambition to make the United States the “crypto capital of the planet”.

Indeed, one of his first steps after returning to the White House last year was issuing a presidential order to “support the responsible growth of the crypto industry”.

Richard Painter, former chief ethics lawyer at the White House under George W. Bush, told the BBC that the USD 1 billion profit Trump has made from the crypto sector is “extraordinary”.

“This is, of course, a conflict of interest,” Painter asserted.

Echoing that view, Will Walker-Arnott, Director of Private Clients at Raymond James Financial Group, said Trump’s strategy contrasts sharply with that of his predecessors in seeking personal financial gain while in office.

“Jimmy Carter once placed his peanut farm into a blind trust, and George W. Bush sold all his shares in the Texas Rangers before becoming president. Trump, however, appears to have gone about things very differently and has successfully amassed an enormous fortune through his family’s crypto companies,” Walker-Arnott concluded.

Bibles, watches and Trump-branded perfume

The report released on Tuesday shows that Trump’s crypto profits far exceeded the income from his real estate business, the sector that first propelled him onto the world stage.

Trump recorded around USD 77 million (around Rp 1.38 trillion) from his Mar-a-Lago club and USD 122 million (around Rp 2.18 trillion) from his golf club in Doral, Florida.

He also raked in more than USD 30 million (around Rp 538 billion) respectively from several of his golf clubs in Bedminster, New Jersey; Jupiter, Florida; and Turnberry, Scotland.

According to the financial disclosure documents, Trump also generated millions of dollars from various other business lines. This income includes USD 4.7 million (around Rp 84.3 billion) in royalties from sales of Trump-branded watches, alongside other products such as Bibles, trainers, perfume and Trump-branded guitars.

First Lady Melania Trump also listed her earnings for 2025 in the report.

She pocketed USD 10.7 million (around Rp 192 billion) from a “licensing agreement” relating to a documentary about her released last year. In addition, Melania recorded income of USD 6 million (around Rp 107 billion) from sales of NFTs (non-fungible tokens), digital image assets sold online.

Meanwhile, the president recorded income of around USD 86.5 million (around Rp 1.55 trillion) sourced from legal settlement payments.

That figure includes USD 16 million (around Rp 287 billion) from a lawsuit against ABC, USD 16 million from CBS Broadcasting and CBS Interactive, USD 24.5 million (around Rp 439 billion) from Meta, USD 22 million (around Rp 394 billion) from YouTube, and USD 8 million (around Rp 143 billion) from platform X.

Nevertheless, the White House stated that most of the legal settlement money has been allocated to the construction of a future Trump presidential library, as well as to a non-profit organisation focused on maintaining parkland in the Washington DC area.

According to Forbes magazine’s list of the world’s richest people, Trump’s wealth is currently estimated at USD 6 billion (around Rp 107.7 trillion), a dramatic jump from USD 2.3 billion in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Billionaires Index puts the president’s net worth higher still, at USD 7.6 billion (around Rp 136.4 trillion).

Since returning to the White House, Trump has consistently taken a friendly approach towards the crypto industry, even as companies affiliated with his family have aggressively issued new digital tokens.

This friendly stance has been reinforced by the appointment of a new financial regulator. The Chair of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) appointed by Trump is now widely regarded as a close ally of the crypto industry.

Since taking office in April 2025, SEC Chair Paul Atkins has changed the direction of the agency’s policy, moving away from what was seen as his predecessor’s overly strict approach that frequently pursued compliance through enforcement actions.

Furthermore, last July, President Trump officially signed the GENIUS Act to realise his mission of “making the United States the undisputed leader in digital assets”.

At more than 900 pages long, Trump’s latest annual financial disclosure far exceeds the size of his predecessors’ reports. By comparison, Joe Biden’s financial disclosure in his final full year in office was just 11 pages long.
