US President Donald Trump is reportedly seeking to obtain veto rights over potential Russian or Chinese investments in Greenland. The strategic move aims to safeguard US national interests in the Arctic region rich in natural resources. According to The Telegraph citing diplomatic sources, the main objective of the Trump administration in negotiating Greenland’s future is to prevent Beijing from gaining access to strategic mineral resources on the island. Representatives from the United States, Greenland, and Denmark are reportedly conducting secret negotiations on a deal that could satisfy Trump’s desire to control the territory. The talks are designed as a diplomatic channel so Washington would no longer rely on military threats to seize the Arctic island. Washington’s primary focus is concern about China’s dominance in the global supply of rare earth elements. Currently, China controls around 70% of global rare earth supply and 90% of global processing. The United States believes this dominance could be leveraged by Beijing as a geopolitical and economic tool against Western countries. Diplomatic sources say the United States would only seek to extract the majority of oil reserves, uranium, rare earth metals, and other critical minerals beneath Greenland’s ice if Beijing truly cuts off global supply. Although Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Trump has repeatedly stated that the territory should join the United States. He emphasised the strategic importance of the island for United States national security in the Arctic. Meanwhile, the Danish and Greenlandic governments have issued strong cautions to Washington. They urged respect for their territorial integrity and warned the US against unilateral seizure attempts. To date, the status of the negotiations remains under further validation by the relevant parties.
