Trump Provokes, Iran Retaliates by Striking US Military Bases

Tensions between the United States (US) and Iran have escalated again after a previously announced ceasefire agreement failed to hold. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on Saturday morning (27/6) that it had targeted a number of US military bases in the region in retaliation for airstrikes carried out by Washington in southern Iran. In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, the IRGC accused the United States of violating commitments related to the ceasefire. According to the IRGC, the US military launched airstrikes against Iran’s coastal areas, triggering a military response from the Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces. “IRGC naval forces targeted American military positions across the region in response to the aggression carried out by the United States,” the statement read. Previously, the US military confirmed it had conducted operations against several Iranian military targets on Friday (26/6). US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated the strikes targeted missile and drone storage sites, as well as radar facilities in Iran’s coastal region. According to a CNN International report citing a US official, the operation has been completed. Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported that a projectile struck an area near a pier in Sirik, in southern Iran. This latest attack comes shortly after relations between the two countries had shown signs of easing through a ceasefire agreement. However, an incident involving an Iranian drone attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz triggered a retaliatory response from the United States, further worsening the security situation in the region. Amid the rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, the Middle East also recorded other diplomatic developments. Israel and Lebanon have reached an agreement to end the fighting between the Israeli military and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. The deal is seen as an initial step towards stability, with provisions for Hezbollah to disarm and Israel to withdraw its forces from Lebanese territory. However, the implementation of the agreement still faces challenges as Hezbollah has stated it will not cooperate. The latest escalation between the US and Iran raises fresh concerns over the stability of the Middle East, particularly as the two countries engage in tit-for-tat attacks amid a situation that was previously expected to move towards de-escalation.
