Trump 'prefers' Vance over Rubio as Republican Party leader

Washington (ANTARA) - US President and Republican Party chairman Donald Trump is reportedly favouring Vice President James David Vance over Secretary of State Marco Rubio as the Republican presidential candidate for the 2028 election.

“JD (James David) is our person, we have to help JD,” a source was quoted as saying by MS NOW on Friday.

According to the report, Trump has until now viewed both Vance and Rubio as potential candidates for the Republican nomination. However, Trump’s support for Rubio is said to have waned in recent weeks.

Trump’s attention was drawn to the way Vance has maintained his own approach amid a challenging political environment whilst continuing to push the administration’s agenda, the report added.

Nevertheless, Trump is known for frequently changing his views about people, the report noted.

In early July, the Associated Press, citing Rubio’s aides, reported that the secretary of state was prepared to withdraw from the nomination race if Vance decided to run for the Republican candidacy in the 2028 election.

The Republican Party must choose its presidential candidate before the general election in November 2028, as under the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, Trump may only serve two terms as president.

Among the potential candidates, Trump has previously named members of his cabinet, including Vance, Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
