Trump Plans to Form 'AI Force' and Appoint Leader as 'AI Czar'
US President Donald Trump plans to form an ‘AI Force’ and appoint a leader whom he refers to as an ‘AI Czar’ to manage artificial intelligence (AI) affairs.
The plan was shared by Trump via a post on Truth Social on 19 September, although he has yet to explain the structure or the mechanism for its implementation.
Trump stated that the formation of the AI Force would be part of his efforts to maintain the United States’ position as a global leader in the technology. “For this purpose, I will form an ‘AI Force’, similar to my move to form the ‘Space Force’,” Trump wrote, as reported by Reuters on Sunday (20/9/2026).
In the same post, Trump mentioned that the individual appointed as the ‘AI Czar’ would be announced shortly. He even added that only individuals with high IQs would be eligible to apply for the position.
Trump also emphasised that he would not limit the development of the AI industry in the US. “We will not at all hinder or limit the growth of this incredible industry. Instead, we will support, assist, and oversee it as this industry grows!” he said.
According to Trump, the government will continue to take action against the misuse of AI by utilising existing legal systems. He views AI as a technological revolution that could have a massive impact on the US economy, even estimating its potential contribution could reach 25% of the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
If realised, this would mark the second appointment of an AI Czar under the Trump administration. Venture capital investor David Sacks previously held such a role before resigning in the spring and subsequently transitioning into an external advisor.
Trump’s statement comes as the competition between the US and China to become the AI leader intensifies. Both nations view this technology as vital to their economic and military strength, while Trump believes that excessive regulation could slow down US companies in facing competitors from China.
The plan was also announced ahead of Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on 25 September.
On 20 September, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York to discuss several issues, including AI security, trade, and the economy.
