Trump Phone Exposed: A Rebranded Taiwanese Smartphone Made in China

A major deception behind the Trump Mobile T1 has been exposed. The smartphone promoted by US President Donald Trump is not an American-made product. Based on a component-level investigation and teardown, the device is merely an older HTC model that has been given a makeover.

The physical resemblance between the Trump Mobile T1 and an HTC handset had been noted since the device first began shipping. However, definitive proof has now been published by the team at iFixit, an organisation renowned for dismantling electronic devices to examine their components and repairability.

Working with NBC News, the iFixit team conducted a full investigation, from CT scanning to a complete disassembly. The results were unequivocal: the Trump T1 is a clone of the HTC U24 Pro.

Before opening the casing, the iFixit team scanned the internal structure of the Trump T1 and compared it with scans of the HTC U24 Pro. The results showed that both devices share a nearly identical frame structure and component layout. Upon disassembly, the similarities became even more apparent. The processor used is a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3, exactly the same as the one found in the HTC device.

The differences that do exist offer virtually no technological added value and are mostly cosmetic or simply a change of component supplier. The detailed differences include a slightly larger battery capacity in the Trump T1 compared to the HTC version, Micron-manufactured storage and RAM in the Trump T1 versus SK Hynix components in the HTC U24 Pro, and external design tweaks such as altered speaker hole patterns, a shifted camera flash position due to an extended connector cable, and a signature gold paint job on the body.

The most conclusive test proving the identical nature of the devices occurred when the iFixit team transplanted the main board from an HTC U24 Pro into the Trump T1’s body. The device powered on and functioned perfectly without any issues, confirming that both are built on the exact same mould, design, and engineering blueprint.

Beyond the design issue, the most attention-grabbing aspect is the origin of manufacture. Since its launch, Trump Mobile aggressively promoted the device as a ‘Made in USA’ product. However, that phrase was quietly removed from their official website some time ago. Now, the phone’s packaging merely states it is ‘proudly assembled in the USA’.

According to iFixit’s findings, it is highly likely that the assembly claim refers to only a small part of the production process. The strongest suspicion is that the entire body, frame, and even the screen are mass-produced overseas, typically in Chinese factories that serve as the world’s electronics production hub. Once these parts arrive in America, other components are installed there to allow the ‘local assembly’ label to be applied.

As of the time of reporting, Trump Mobile has not issued any response regarding the teardown results or the allegations that their product is merely a rebranded version of an existing design.

This fact confirms what many had already suspected: the Trump T1 is not a new innovation but a classic example of a refurbished phone or a reassembled product masquerading as a knock-off of the original. This strategy is commonly executed by taking a mature design, mass-producing it at low cost, and then giving it a new name and brand—often associated with a famous figure—to resell it at a price far higher than its actual value.
