United States President Donald Trump has officially signed a decision to impose a 50 percent import tariff on various goods from Canada. The move is a retaliatory action against what Trump described as “unfair treatment” of American automobiles, processed dairy products, and alcoholic beverages. The new import duties are scheduled to take effect on 19 August. The policy marks a major escalation in trade tensions between the two neighbouring countries in North America. The White House stated that the high tariff imposition is necessary to protect the sustainability of domestic businesses and industries in the United States. The goods targeted by the tariffs range from daily consumer items such as wine and hockey sticks to industrial commodities like commercial cement. However, several major Canadian export commodities were reported to have escaped the scope of the new tariffs, including the energy sector, potash, critical minerals, and fishery products. This firm step further reinforces the trade barriers previously erected by both countries. Earlier, the US had imposed active tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent on steel, aluminium, and copper products from Canada. Additionally, Washington has imposed a 35 percent tariff on softwood lumber and a 25 percent tax on non-US components in the automotive industry. In a counter-response, Canada has imposed a 25 percent retaliatory tariff on a number of US imported goods, including steel, aluminium, and motor vehicles. The new tariff announcement, released on Monday, follows a previous threat by President Trump to impose tariffs due to the impact of Canadian wildfire smoke blanketing cities in the United States.
