Trump Officially Appoints US Intelligence Chief as AI Czar
US President Donald Trump has officially formed a task force to oversee the development of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Trump has also appointed the leader of this task force, whom he previously referred to as the ‘AI Czar’.
The AI Task Force, which Trump considers to be his ‘AI Force’, aims to produce a monitoring report on the development of artificial intelligence technology within 120 days.
“The White House has formed a task force to research the risks and opportunities of AI and to recommend what role the federal government should play in overseeing the technology,” according to a Reuters report.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Trump has appointed Jay Clayton to lead the task force. Clayton currently serves as the Director of National Intelligence for the United States.
He stated that he would lead the group, known as the “Super Intelligence Force,” which will effectively act as the AI lead for President Donald Trump.
In an interview with CNBC International prior to the announcement of his appointment as AI Czar, Clayton stated that “super intelligence (AI) is a national security issue.” He suggested that federal agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission, are best suited to oversee AI companies, rather than relying on civil litigation systems.
Clayton’s comments came a day after Trump met at the White House with leaders from prominent technology companies, including AI giants Anthropic and OpenAI. During the meeting, Trump stated that he and the industry executives agreed that the industry would “self-regulate” and remain responsible for developing their technology safely.
