Trump-Netanyahu's Close Ally Defeated in Hungarian Election
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BUDAPEST – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has acknowledged defeat in the general election on Sunday. This comes after initial official results indicated that the opposition party led by Peter Magyar is in the lead.
This defeat leaves US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Russian President Vladimir Putin without a prominent ally and friend in the European Union.
Orban stated that the election results are clear and painful, and he congratulated the winning party, adding that he will serve his nation from the opposition and will never give up.
This defeat is likely to end Hungary’s obstructive role in the European Union, as well as pave the way for a European Union loan of $105 billion to war-torn Ukraine, which had been blocked by the prime minister.
Hungary’s opposition party, Tisza, led by Péter Magyar, has won the election, ending Viktor Orbán’s 16 years in power, a result that is likely to shake the White House and reshape the country’s relations with the European Union.
Less than three hours after polling stations closed on Sunday, Orbán conceded defeat after what he described as election results that were “painful but unambiguous”.
“I congratulate the winning party,” the right-wing populist told his supporters in Budapest. “We too will serve the Hungarian nation and our homeland from the opposition.”
The election was closely watched worldwide as a test of the resilience of the global right-wing movement. Many among them have long viewed Orbán as an inspiration and sought to follow his lead.
