Washington (ANTARA) - President Donald Trump has voiced optimism regarding the possibility of resuming negotiations with Iran, which he said could occur within the next two days in Pakistan.

“Something could happen within the next two days,” Trump stated in a telephone interview with the New York Post on Tuesday.

In the negotiation process with Iran, Trump referred to Pakistan’s Field Marshal General Asim Munir, who has strong ties with Trump from his efforts to mediate the resolution of the Pakistan-India conflict last year.

“He is fantastic, and because of that, we will most likely return there,” Trump said.

About an hour before that statement, Trump had sought to dampen prospects of returning negotiations to Pakistan, telling the Post in a separate telephone call.

“We might go to another location. We have started thinking about other locations (for the negotiations),” he said.

It is unclear what changed between the two telephone calls.

A White House official separately confirmed that further talks with Iran are still under consideration ahead of the potential end of the short-term ceasefire next week.

“Further talks are being discussed but nothing has been scheduled at this time,” the official said.

The war involving Iran, the US, and Israel has triggered a surge in global oil prices due to Tehran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

However, when the first Iran-US negotiations in Islamabad last week failed to produce an agreement, Trump ordered the US Navy to blockade that strategic maritime route.

Trump condemned European countries for refusing to join efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

In contrast, many European leaders have blamed Trump for starting the war against Iran without consulting them.
