Trump Nearly Sent Ground Troops to Iran to Seize Uranium, Here's Why It Was Cancelled

Tensions between the United States (US) and Iran reportedly reached an extremely dangerous nadir. President Donald Trump is said to have nearly approved the deployment of ground troops into Iranian territory to seize enriched uranium reserves, before ultimately cancelling the high-risk plan. A report released by CNN revealed that the US military had prepared a very serious ground operation option. The urgency of this plan was evident when the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, abruptly left an important meeting with NATO officials in Brussels, Belgium, on 19 May. Caine immediately flew back to US Central Command (CENTCOM) headquarters in Florida to receive a combat briefing. Internal sources indicated that the classification level of the briefing showed how close Washington was to an invasion decision. However, after hearing a presentation on the potential military consequences, Trump chose to pull the emergency brake. Trump was reportedly concerned that a ground operation would not only trigger a massive military response from Tehran but would also drag the US into a prolonged war that would damage global economic stability. Additionally, the risk of large-scale American military casualties was a primary consideration for the President. Interestingly, the planning for this military operation took place almost simultaneously with Trump’s claims that Washington and Tehran were nearing a peace agreement regarding the nuclear programme and the opening of the Strait of Hormuz. On the other hand, Iran, through Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, stated that a memorandum of understanding mediated by Pakistan is now at the closest stage to finalisation. The contradiction between ground war preparations and diplomatic progress has fuelled speculation that the military threat was part of the US strategy of maximum pressure against Iran. The Pentagon and the spokesperson for the US Joint Chiefs of Staff have yet to provide official comment regarding the leaked ground operation plan. However, this situation underscores that stability in the Middle East region remains on a knife-edge, where one person’s decision can alter the global security map in an instant.
