Trump Irked After Being Called Desperate by Mojtaba Khamenei, Hits Back
US President Donald Trump has hit back at Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, after being labelled desperate over a peace agreement, countering that Iran is the desperate party. “We are not meeting out of desperation, Iran is,” Trump stated on Truth Social, according to AFP on Friday (19/6/2026). Trump displayed frustration towards both Iran and domestic critics who argue the deal benefits Tehran without properly curbing its nuclear programme. He added that the United States would use the 60-day period intended for both nations to attempt to formulate a long-term agreement. “They will not get any money, not a single cent!” Trump declared. Factions from both the Republican and Democratic parties have criticised the deal for offering sanctions relief and USD 300 billion in reconstruction funds to Iran. Trump, however, insisted that Iran’s power has now diminished. “The war has weakened Iran! It no longer has an Air Force, Navy, Anti-Aircraft Equipment, Radar, or practically anything, yet the Democrats say Iran is in a better state now than four months ago. Can you imagine getting away with that??? How stupid are some people???” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post. Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had previously stated that Trump used various bargaining chips to secure a peace deal out of desperation. Mojtaba also said he agreed to the deal with the US to end the war, despite having “different views”. In a statement read on Iranian state television, as reported by Press TV and AFP on Friday (19/6/2026), Mojtaba announced that a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US had been signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Trump. He praised Iranian officials for their efforts in reaching the agreement. However, Mojtaba then described Trump as desperate to reach a deal with Iran. “In the process of reaching this stage, the officials, certainly with compassion and good intentions, have made many efforts. And of course, it is the US President who, out of desperation, used various bargaining chips for this purpose,” Mojtaba said in a statement released on Thursday (18/6).
