Trump Irked After Being Called Desperate by Mojtaba Khamenei, Hits Back
US President Donald Trump has responded to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who described him as being desperate regarding a peace agreement. Trump countered by accusing Iran of being the party that is truly desperate.
“We are not meeting because of desperation; it is Iran that is so,” Trump stated on Truth Social, as reported by AFP on Friday (19/6/202<0xC2>6).
Trump expressed his frustration, both towards Iran and towards domestic critics who argue that the deal benefits Tehran without properly restricting its nuclear programme. Trump added that the United States would utilise the 60-day period intended for both Iran and the US to attempt to formulate a long-term agreement.
“They will not get any money, not a single cent!” Trump declared.
Both Republican and Democratic factions have criticised the deal because it offers sanctions relief and reconstruction funds amounting to USD 300 billion for Iran. However, Trump insisted that Iran’s strength has now been weakened.
“War has weakened Iran! This country no longer has an Air Force, Navy, Anti-Aircraft Equipment, Radar, or practically anything, yet the Democrats say Iran’s current situation is better than it was four months ago. Can you imagine getting away with that??? How foolish are some people???” Trump wrote in his Truth Social post.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had previously claimed that US President Donald Trump was using various leverage points to secure a peace deal because of desperation. Mojtaba also stated that he had agreed to a deal with the US to end the war, despite having “different views.”
In a statement read on Iranian state television, as reported by Press TV and AFP on Friday (19/6/2026), Mojtaba announced that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the US had been signed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Trump.
He praised the Iranian officials who helped achieve the agreement. However, Mojtaba subsequently claimed that Trump was desperate to reach a deal with Iran.
“In the process of reaching this stage, officials, certainly with compassion and good intentions, have made many efforts. And certainly, the US President is the one who, out of desperation, has used various leverage points for this purpose,” Mojtaba said in a statement released on Thursday (18/6).
