Trump: Iran Frees US Citizen as Goodwill Gesture

A United States citizen detained in Iran since December 2024 has been released and is now en route back to the US. President Donald Trump and the individual’s lawyer confirmed the news on Wednesday local time. Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian national who runs a non-profit organisation, was previously held on espionage charges that her lawyer described as false. Jared Genser, the international human rights lawyer representing Karari, stated via a post on platform X that the release would not have been possible without the extraordinary and persistent efforts of President Trump. Through Truth Social, Trump announced that the American citizen had been unlawfully detained without explicitly naming Karari. “She is now safe outside of Iran and in good condition. The United States appreciates this gesture of goodwill from Iran!” Trump wrote. Although Karari has been freed, neither the Trump administration nor Genser detailed how the release was secured. Iran has a long history of detaining foreign nationals as political leverage. A Washington Post report in April indicated that the Trump administration intended to seek the release of American citizens as part of negotiations to end the war. Several other Americans are still believed to be held in Iran, including Kamran Hekmati, a Jewish-American jeweller, and Reza Valizadeh, a journalist. The Trump administration has designated both as unlawfully detained, an official category that considers them political hostages. Karari’s release comes at a low point in Washington-Tehran relations, despite the signing of an initial peace agreement in June. The situation on the ground shows significant military escalation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had previously designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Unlawful Detention and warned US citizens against travelling there. “This heinous practice must end,” Rubio asserted. Jared Genser also expressed gratitude to the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation and Diane Foley for their role in helping to secure Karari’s release. As of press time, the White House and the State Department had not provided additional comments regarding the details of the release negotiations.
