Trump Imposes 'Most Devastating' Economic Sanctions on Iran, China Responds
China on Thursday (20/8/2026) opposed the latest economic sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump on Iran. Beijing stressed that diplomacy is the way to end the conflict.
“Imposing sanctions and pressure will not help solve the problem,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian.
“China urges the relevant parties to take responsible steps and resolve the issue through diplomatic and political means,” Lin said.
Donald Trump on Wednesday announced what he called “the most devastating economic operation ever taken against a country.” The latest sanctions are aimed at isolating Iran and reminding countries and companies that help Tehran that they will face serious consequences.
According to Trump, the US will cut off financial and commercial channels that provide economic support to Iran. “Today, I also announce that any country that allows financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will face enormous economic consequences,” Trump said.
