New York (ANTARA) - United States President Donald Trump on Thursday (2/4) imposed 100 percent ad valorem import duties on certain patented pharmaceuticals and related pharmaceutical raw materials.

In an executive order signed on Thursday, Trump stated that these imports “in certain quantities and conditions potentially threaten US national security”.

The imposed tariffs will take effect on or after 31 July 2026 at 00.01 Eastern Daylight Time (11.01 WIB).

The order states that the tariffs will be set at 20 percent for products from companies that have or are likely to soon have approved plans by the US Secretary of Commerce to relocate production domestically (onshoring).

However, the tariffs will rise to 100 percent starting 2 April 2030.

Japan, the European Union, South Korea, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein, which have collectively signed trade agreements with the US, will face 15 percent tariffs. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom will face 10 percent tariffs.

The order also states that generic pharmaceutical products, biosimilars, and related materials are currently exempt from the tariffs, including nuclear medicines, plasma-based therapies, fertility treatments, as well as cell and gene therapies.
