Jakarta, Beritasatu.com - United States President Donald Trump has stated that Indonesia possesses high-quality copper, signalling that America will increase its share of copper imports from Indonesia.

Director of Mineral and Coal Downstreaming at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Rizwan Aryadi Ramdhan, said his office would work together with relevant institutions to ensure that copper products sold to America are the result of value-added processing or downstreaming carried out domestically.

"Together, we are formulating pro-downstreaming policies. So there will be no exports in raw form," Rizwan said, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (16/7/2025).

According to him, the government has already banned the export of copper concentrate, and his office is encouraging downstreaming processes to be carried out domestically.

"We support production processing facilities being located domestically," he added.

Although not entirely exempt from tariffs, Indonesia has been subject to significantly lower tariffs compared to Malaysia at 25 per cent, Vietnam at 20 per cent plus 40 per cent for transhipment, and Thailand at 36 per cent.

As reported from the White House YouTube channel, Donald Trump noted that Indonesia is known as a producer of high-quality copper. With a tariff agreement of 19 per cent reached, this creates an opportunity for Indonesian exports to enter the US at a lower tariff rate.
