Trump Fuming Behind Closed Doors Amid Escalating Iran Conflict
The Daily Beast has reported, via NBC News, an increase in tension within the White House as US President Donald Trump grows increasingly frustrated with the course of the war with Iran. The situation is reportedly exacerbated by differing views among his senior aides regarding the most appropriate strategy to end the conflict.
According to the report, which cites a US official and several sources familiar with internal government discussions, Trump reportedly erupted in anger during a meeting with senior national security officials last week. During the meeting, Trump allegedly used harsh language to express his disappointment at the lack of meaningful progress in the war, which began on 28 February and has resulted in the deaths of 18 US military personnel to date.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned that although Washington has achieved several tactical victories on the ground, the United States now faces the risk of a strategic defeat due to the absence of a clear political direction or decisive decisions regarding the war’s end goal. Furthermore, The Daily Beast noted that Trump’s advisors and allies are struggling to reach an agreement on the next steps.
According to the official, there are differing views within the US administration regarding the primary priorities of the war. Some believe the focus should be on destroying Iran’s nuclear programme, while others emphasise the importance of maintaining maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz or destroying Iran’s missile and drone capabilities. Meanwhile, a Trump ally quoted by NBC News stated that the President feels deeply frustrated because efforts to persuade Iran to reach a deal have proven far more difficult than anticipated.
