Trump Establishes New Cybersecurity Guidelines for US Classified Systems
US President Donald Trump on Friday signed a presidential memorandum establishing new cybersecurity guidelines for National Security Systems (NSS) that handle the country’s classified information. The official order, sent to senior officials across the government, “establishes clear structure, authorities, roles, and responsibilities for NSS governance and accountability for NSS cybersecurity requirements for their owners and operators,” the White House said in a statement. The policy reshapes the National Security Systems Committee and seeks to modernise it for the first time in more than three decades. Additionally, the committee is tasked with establishing “baseline cybersecurity requirements for all NSS and enhancing interagency accountability and coordination to implement necessary cyber defences across NSS.” The committee will oversee national security systems throughout the federal government, issue binding security directives to operators, and promote interagency coordination and information sharing. The Director of the National Security Agency will serve as the committee chair and will be able to “leverage the agency’s full technical strength to provide advanced defence and assistance to strengthen NSS security across the US government,” the White House said.
