Trump Dissatisfied with Iran's Proposal, Conflict Negotiations Remain Stalemated

US President Donald Trump has stated his dissatisfaction with Iran’s latest proposal in efforts to continue negotiations on the conflict that has been ongoing for around two months. Quoted from Reuters on Saturday (2/5/2026), the statement indicates that the impasse between Washington and Tehran persists, even though the two countries had agreed to a ceasefire on 8 April 2026. To date, there is no certainty of a follow-up meeting after brief talks mediated by Pakistan last month. “They want to make a deal, but I’m not satisfied with it,” Trump told reporters at the White House. He also assessed that Iran’s leadership is not solid and is divided into several groups, complicating the negotiation process. On the other hand, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasised that Tehran remains open to diplomacy. However, he conditioned it on a change in approach from the United States. According to Araqchi, the US needs to stop rhetoric deemed threatening and provocative actions if it wants to advance the talks. Nevertheless, he stressed that Iran’s military remains on alert to face potential threats. This step is linked to differences in views between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who previously criticised the US strategy in dealing with Iran. A senior Pentagon official described statements from the German side as “inappropriate and unhelpful”. One of the main issues still being debated is control over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route previously used by around 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies. The United States claims to have fully blockaded the route, while Iran demands an end to the blockade as a condition for reopening shipping access. In its latest proposal, Iran is said to have offered discussions on opening the strait, on the condition that the US halts attacks and lifts the blockade.
