US President Donald Trump sought to downplay the potential failure of peace negotiations with Iran. During an interview with CNBC on Monday, 1 June 2026, Trump dismissed the negotiation process as becoming extremely tedious and claimed he was indifferent if the talks ended entirely.

This statement came following a report from Iran’s state news agency Tasnim, which stated that Tehran’s negotiating team had halted communications with Washington through a mediator. The move was taken as a protest against the intensification of Israel’s military campaign in Lebanon, targeting the Iran-backed Hizbullah group.

“Honestly, I don’t care if the negotiations end. I really don’t care,” Trump said. “If they end, they end. If not, I think they’ve already wasted too much time.”

Despite displaying indifference on television, Trump subsequently issued a contradictory statement through a post on Truth Social, claiming that talks were continuing at high speed with the Islamic Republic of Iran.

News of the suspension of negotiations briefly triggered a rise in global oil prices. However, Trump expressed confidence that commodity prices would decline sharply in the near term. This uncertainty also drew the attention of global market participants.

Amid the deadlock with Tehran, Trump claimed to have achieved progress on the Lebanon front. He stated he had communicated with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who he said had agreed to cancel military operations on the outskirts of Beirut.

“I had a very productive telephone call with PM Bibi Netanyahu. There will be no troops entering Beirut and troops en route have been ordered back to Israel,” Trump wrote. He also stated he had made contact with Hizbullah representatives and claimed both sides had agreed to cease hostilities.

Vice President JD Vance previously revealed that the main sticking point in negotiations was Iran’s nuclear programme and high-level uranium enrichment. Trump insists that Iran must dispose of its entire enriched uranium reserves and end its nuclear programme as a condition for any agreement.

For their part, Iranian leaders have consistently affirmed that their right to uranium enrichment is non-negotiable. To date, there remains no certainty whether the communications suspension reported by Tasnim is permanent or merely a tactic of diplomatic pressure amid Israel’s expanding ground invasion of Lebanon.
