Trump Discusses Ceasefire Following Renewed Conflict; Iran Sets Conditions

US President Donald Trump has stated that Iran and Israel are currently seeking a ceasefire, following a period of renewed tensions and mutual attacks between the two nations. “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are working towards an immediate ceasefire!” Trump said, as reported by AFP on Monday (8/6/2026).

These attacks mark the first breach of the ceasefire that had been in place for two months. Shortly before the announcement, Trump warned both Israel and Iran to cease fire immediately, noting that “final negotiations regarding ‘peace’ are underway, provided they are not hindered by ignorance or stupidity.”

Iran reportedly launched a series of missiles towards Israel on Sunday night and into the early hours of Monday. Israel responded by striking military locations within the Islamic Republic of Iran. The strikes from Tehran followed Israeli attacks on targets belonging to Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shia group, on the southern outskirts of Beirut.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that Tehran remains committed to the negotiating table. He noted that Iran had halted its attacks against Israel following the initial exchange of fire since the April ceasefire. “Diplomacy and defence are the two wings of national strength. We are leaving neither the battlefield nor the negotiating table,” Pezeshkian said, adding that “Tehran will not back down in the face of any threat.”

Iran’s military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, also announced the cessation of operations against Israel. However, the command emphasised that if acts of aggression continue, including in Southern Lebanon, much more severe and destructive retaliatory measures will follow.
