US President Donald Trump has once again voiced his disappointment with his allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO). He believes NATO is not helping him combat Iran.

“The USA does not need anything from NATO, but ‘never forget’ this very important moment,” Trump said in a statement via the social media platform Truth Social, as reported by Anadolu Agency via detikNews on Friday (27/3/2026).

Trump reiterated his frustration with NATO during a cabinet meeting at the White House on Thursday (26/3) local time. The 79-year-old president stated that the US is “very disappointed” with NATO.

“I will say it openly. We are very disappointed with NATO because NATO is doing absolutely nothing,” Trump said in his criticism.

He also stated that NATO “will never” come to the US’s rescue.

“I said 25 years ago that NATO is a paper tiger, but more importantly, that we will come to save them, but they will never come to save us,” he remarked.

For several days, Trump has been calling on US allies to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies. This call even targeted China, a rival of the Land of Uncle Sam.

The impact of US and Israeli attacks on Iran since 28 February 2026 has led Iran to restrict the Strait of Hormuz since early March. As a result, global oil prices have skyrocketed due to disruptions in shipments.

Several European countries have rejected Trump’s call, stating that the Iran conflict is a war started by Trump without consulting US allies.

Previously, Trump also emphasised that the US does not need NATO and described the alliance’s stance as a “very stupid mistake”. However, Trump said he has no plans to withdraw the US from the defence alliance, although he called it a viable option to consider.

Trump has long criticised NATO, and during his first term, according to statements from White House officials, he openly considered pulling the US out of the post-war Western alliance.
