Iran has stated that it will open maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz for two weeks following US President Donald Trump’s decision to delay an attack. Signals of a ceasefire between Iran and the United States have strengthened.

Iran has expressed willingness to engage in talks with the US as an effort to end the war. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Pakistan.

“For two weeks, a safe route through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible through coordination with the Iranian Armed Forces and taking into account technical limitations,” wrote Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on X, as reported by AFP news agency on Wednesday (8/4/2026).

The negotiations are planned to commence in Islamabad starting this Friday. The Supreme National Security Council of the Islamic Republic of Iran has confirmed the talks, stating that they are scheduled to last two weeks with the possibility of extension.

“Extension by mutual agreement of the parties,” it added.

Trump Suspends Attack on Iran for 2 Weeks

US President Donald Trump previously agreed to suspend the attack on Iran. This delay in the attack will also last two weeks.

Trump stated on his social media that the suspension of the attack came after a request from Pakistan. Trump conditioned the delay on the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz.

“Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir from Pakistan, where they requested that I postpone the use of destructive force that was to be sent tonight to Iran, and on the condition that Iran agrees to the full, immediate, and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attacks against Iran for a two-week period. This will be a two-way ceasefire!” Trump said.

According to him, an agreement between the US and Iran is likely to be reached. He also spoke about long-term peace with Iran.

“We are very close to achieving a definitive agreement on long-term peace with Iran, and peace in the Middle East. We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran, and believe it forms a workable basis for negotiation. Almost all the various points of contention from the past have been agreed upon between the United States and Iran, but the two-week period will allow that agreement to be finalised and completed,” Trump explained.
