Trump criticises Canada amid tariff trade dispute

US President Donald Trump on Sunday criticised Canada over tariffs and renewed his attacks on the relationship between the two countries.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a state, without being a state!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also accused Canada of imposing high tariffs on US agricultural products. “They have also been charging our great farmers massive tariffs for years. No more!!!” he said.

The statement was made amid the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

Earlier, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney accused the US of using new tariffs to “hurt and divide” Canada. He called the policy a “miscalculation” and pledged to take retaliatory action of equivalent value starting 8 September.

Carney also said Canada had temporarily halted trade negotiations with Washington after the US made demands that Ottawa found unacceptable.

Meanwhile, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada had walked away from a nearly completed deal that could have further lowered tariffs on Canadian exports to the US market.
