US President Donald Trump stated that talks with Iran are bearing fruit and claimed that the Strait of Hormuz will soon be opened. He added that the vital strait will subsequently be under joint control of the US and Iran.

Quoted by CNN on Monday (23/3/2026), Trump was asked by reporters about when the Strait of Hormuz would reopen. Trump said the strait would soon be opened.

“It will soon be opened, if negotiations with Iran continue smoothly,” said Trump.

Trump stated that in the future, the strait would be controlled by Iran and the US, regardless of who the future Iranian leader is.

“It will be jointly controlled,” he said.

“I and the Ayatollah, whoever the Ayatollah is now, whoever the next Ayatollah is,” he added.

In addition, Trump emphasised that there would be a regime change in Iran. “And there will also be a very serious regime change,” Trump added, citing early morning attacks in the conflict that killed most senior Iranian leaders. “A regime change will automatically occur,” he said.

Prior to that, he stated that weekend talks showed hope for ending the conflict. “But we are dealing with some people who I think are very reasonable, very solid,” Trump told Collins.

“The people inside know who they are, they are very respected, and perhaps one of them is the right person we are looking for.”
