Trump Claims Spanish Migrant Crisis Serves as a Warning for the US
US President Donald Trump is attempting to leverage the migrant crisis occurring in Ceuta, a Spanish autonomous city in North Africa, for political advantage. Trump stated that the migrant situation serves as a warning for the US should his political opponents take power, describing the situation in Ceuta as “horrific” and “like an invasion.”
“It is horrific. Remember those images. That is our fate in the next three years if the wrong side is in power,” Trump said, as reported by Fox News and AFP. He further warned the American people that “if the Democrats are in power, you will not have a very good life.”
Trump commented on the Spanish migrant crisis while attending a cabinet meeting at Camp David, Maryland, on Friday. He warned that the US risks facing a similar crisis along its coastal regions. “I saw the situation in Spain yesterday, and I witnessed the disaster occurring there. It looks like an invasion of a country by hundreds of thousands of people, and the same will happen to us if the Republicans are not elected—even worse and on a much larger scale,” the US President added.
US Vice President JD Vance also weighed in, posting news coverage of the Ceuta crisis on social media while warning that it highlights “radical left-wing globalist policies that have triggered an invasion of the West.” Vance noted on X that the images from Spain serve as a “sad reminder of the consequences of mass migration.”
The White House, in a separate statement, focused on linking the Ceuta situation to Trump’s signature hardline domestic immigration policies. With recent polls showing Trump’s support dropping to 30 per cent and Democrats determined to seize control of the US House of Representatives in the upcoming November midterms, the migrant crisis provides an opportunity for the Republican Party to revitalise their primary political issue.
Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election was partly driven by voter concerns regarding uncontrolled migration at the US-Mexico border. At that time, Trump warned that migrants were coming to kill Americans and even prey on their pets.
The US State Department, in its commentary, blamed the Spanish government’s policies for the crisis in Ceuta, stating, “This unacceptable incident is a direct result of deliberate efforts by the Spanish government to allow and facilitate mass illegal migration to Europe.”
Spanish authorities, as reported by Reuters and Anadolu Agency, stated that the majority of over 50,000 illegal migrants who attempted to cross the border via land and sea in recent days have since returned voluntarily to Morocco. However, Spanish government representatives in Ceuta reported that at least 57 bodies have been found on the Spanish side of the border, with the possibility of additional fatalities on the Moroccan side. Local authorities suggested that some individuals likely drowned while attempting to swim to Ceuta from Morocco, while others died after being crushed while attempting to climb the rocks of the border breakwater.
